Surprise Engagement

You can imagine my excitement every time I get asked to photograph a proposal, then – I feel like I’m on a secret mission in the name of love!

I just love, love!

My session with Ray and Yamile started out with Ray reaching out to me to see if I’d be able to help him pull this off. (The answer to this is always yes, by the way).

He asked for suggestions on how to go about planning a surprise engagement photo session. So I explained to him we would choose a date time and location and act as if you just set up a couples photo session and then a few minutes in I  would pose them facing each other and prompt him by saying "Ray, did you have a question?" And he would then propose. And we would get lots of photos and different shots and then let them go on their way to enjoy the evening.

And that was what we did.

We met at Bell Rock in Sedona and began walking the path. It was just before sunset and then finally the moment came and he asked and she of course said YES. And I didn’t know until the next day that my assistant captured the whole thing in video so it was an awesome little extra surprise to be able to give that to the couple as well.

Ray did such a good job of orchestrating this whole thing and keeping it a secret from Yamile, which made for one of the most genuine and sweetest proposals!

Not to mention the ring is gorgeous!

Congratulations to both of you, and I am so glad I was there to document this incredible moment for you!

Planning Your Surprise Engagement Session:

  1. Think about where you want to pop the question. The location should be somewhere you both enjoy or possibly somewhere brand new! Its creates less suspicion leading up to the surprise.

  1. Attire/ wardrobe. It usually works out to tell your partner to dress for a "couples phot session" or a date night out, then they dress nice and you can keep your secret about what’s really happening. I promise you wont regret getting all fancy, the nicer the clothes the more elegant and put together your images will turn out. Keep it simple though solid colors no crazy prints. If you need help coordinating, reach out to me, I'll direct you just like any other photo session.

  1. The big question.... What are you going to say? Will you get down on one knee? Do you need a prompt on when to do it? Weather you pour your heart out or keep it simple, I’m here for you.

  1. Plan something to do together as a couple after. For many reasons but mostly to celebrate!!!

If your feeling inspired and want to chat about setting up a surprise engagement photo session reach out to me!!! I would love to document your love story…
